Age-specific, fingertip-pressure adjusting · Serving Spokane Valley families since 2003
A newborn's spine works hard from day one.
The first months are a blur of feedings, naps that will not stick, and a hundred small questions about whether your baby is doing okay. Their nervous system is coordinating all of it - digestion, sleep, mood - at once.
- The 2 a.m. feeding that never quite gets easier, no matter which side you try.
- A head that always tilts or turns the same direction, however you position the swaddle.
- Fussiness or gas your pediatrician says your baby will simply "grow out of."
- You want a real check on how your baby's nervous system is doing, not just a feeling.
Why a newborn's spine gets checked at all.
Even an uncomplicated delivery is physically demanding on a baby. The pulling, twisting, and positioning of birth can create tension in a newborn's spine and nervous system - often the very first physical stress a person ever experiences. That tension is called a subluxation: a spot where the spine is not moving quite right, which can affect how the nervous system communicates with the rest of the body.
An infant adjustment looks nothing like an adult one. Dr. Tom uses about the same pressure you would use to check a tomato for ripeness - no popping, no twisting, no force. The goal is simply to find restriction early and gently encourage the spine toward normal movement.
Babies at Chiropractic Works Wellness Center have started care as early as just a few hours old!
How care works, from first check to first steps.
Consult
We sit down and get to know you and your baby: the pregnancy, the delivery, feeding, sleep, and anything on your mind. Dr. Tom then walks you through how a newborn's spine and nervous system work - and just how delicate they are - so you understand exactly what he is checking and why. The exam itself is gentle and pain-free, using fingertip pressure only. Education first, always.
Plan
Dr. Tom explains exactly what he finds and builds an age-specific plan, in plain language, before anything happens.
Gentle visits
Brief, fingertip-pressure visits as your baby grows, with re-scans along the way so you can see progress instead of wondering about it.
“The first physical stress most of us ever experience happens the day we are born. That is exactly why a newborn's spine deserves the same attention we give an adult's.”
“Our littlest, the 9 month old, has been coming since she was 5 days old. She is truly the happiest baby!”
Questions new parents ask us.
Is chiropractic care safe for newborns and infants?
Yes. Adjustments for newborns and infants are nothing like adult adjustments. Dr. Tom uses gentle, fingertip-level pressure specifically designed for a baby's developing spine - no popping, no twisting, no discomfort. Babies at Chiropractic Works Wellness Center have been coming in as early as five days old.
How is a baby's adjustment different from an adult's?
An infant adjustment uses about the same pressure you would use to test the ripeness of a tomato. There is no cracking or force involved. The goal is simply to check the spine and nervous system for restriction and gently encourage normal movement.
Can chiropractic help with a tilted head or torticollis?
Many families come in when their baby's head consistently tilts or turns to one side. A gentle spinal and nervous system check can identify areas of restriction and Dr. Tom builds an age-specific plan from there. We always coordinate with your pediatrician on anything outside chiropractic's scope.
What can the birth process do to a newborn's spine?
Birth is physically demanding, even in an uncomplicated delivery. The pulling, twisting, and positioning involved can create tension in a newborn's spine and nervous system. Checking for that tension early, and correcting it gently, is the idea behind newborn chiropractic care.
How soon after birth can my baby be checked?
There is no minimum age. Many Spokane Valley families bring their newborn in within the first couple of weeks, and some the same week they come home from the hospital.
